Because we need to take care of one another…

It is officially Giving Tuesday! A movement created to promote global generosity and combat the more consumerism-driven side of the holidays, for over a decade folks have been leaning into giving when it comes to Giving Tuesday and that is the best thing.

When it comes to where to throw your dollars or volunteer time the options can be overwhelming and it can be hard to know where to create some impact with the holiday pressure on. Here are some quick tips to let the radical generosity roll.

Set a Budget and Give What You Can

If you read my Black Friday shopping tips then you know I love to create a budget and it isn’t just for gifts. Figure out how much you want to spend and then, if you want to donate to multiple groups, figure out how many organizations you can support with those dollars. Also times can be tough! Don’t feel the pressure to give a huge sum if you can’t make it work. Find different ways to give back through volunteer time, donating used goods from your house, or another way.

Follow Your Heart, Seriously

Be it children in need, DV shelters, food pantries, or something else you can help put funds to the causes that really mean something to you! Giving Tuesday is also a great opportunity to go local and put time or money back into your own community. I budget out a donation amount to give quarterly and I am always looking for new groups with local impact that speak to things that align with my values. A quick Google search and you might find your next passion project.

Do Your Research

Not all nonprofits and charities are created equally and it helps to know who you’re dealing with. There are sites like Charity Navigator that rate different groups but apparently even these can be biased so I say independent research is always key. Do a quick search before committing to a new charity. I love to type in, “Is TKTK charity legit?” and then be irate if I find out they legally put 99% of all donations toward overhead and executive costs. Know where your dollars are going and what percentage of them will make it there! Last year when I was thinking about where to make it rain, this article from Love to Know was super helpful.

It’s also worth a gander to see if your employer will match donations to specific organizations. Double your impact, double your fun.

Get Creative and Let the Good, Giving Times Roll

Giving Tuesday is a great reminder to let that generosity flow but remember you can parcel things out throughout the year. Giving money here and there is also impactful and so is your time or talent. If you can’t give money or want to give back in other ways, find time to volunteer. Or offer to utilize your skill set to help with marketing, copywriting, social media management, or something else. In the past I’ve made sets of dominos and donated them to local hospices, volunteered time stocking shelves at a local food pantry, wrote birthday cards for kids in the hospital, and leaned into the PR of it all by doing some free work for a local group. There’s no shortage of ways to make a difference.

Cash helps but there’s so much value in creative human connection and finding new ways to support meaningful causes. Happy giving today and let’s take care of one another every day. ❤️

We’re Sarah and Molly

Sarah and Molly were bloggers many moons ago – back in the earlier 2000’s when blogging was all the rage and we spent the first 30 minutes of every work day (in the office we shared together) AIM’ing links back and forth to each other to catch up on all the tea. We launched The PR Edit in 2024. Less & More is the newest chapter in our blogging journey, focused on motherhood musings, shopping secrets, life lessons, and our usual chit chat.
